  • Christmas

    Students in our school have started preparing for Christmas.
    Here are some slideshows about different activities.

    Christmas tree is very important! Our school has got a nice fir tree but it took a lot of effort to put it up and decorate it. It was fun though! Have a look at slideshow "Christmas tree"!


    Form 1 had made some dwarfs, snowmen and lovely Christmas cards.


    Form 2 made some Christmas decorations called Christmas kräss (jõulukräss). You can make one of your own too! Check it out!



    Christmas in Estonia

    Christmas in Estonia is usually very snowy. Days are very cold.
    But this year the Christmas will maybe be without snow...
    We celebrate Christmas Eve on the 24th of December. Nobody needs to go to work on that day.
    People clean the house, bring the Christmas tree and decorate it and start preparing Christmas dinner. Some people go to church at Christmas too.
    In the evening people sit around the table and eat together with their families.
    Sometimes Santa comes and asks everyone to read a poem or sing a song. Then Santa gives

    everyone presents. If Santa can't come then dwarfs leave the presents under the Christmas tree.
    Everybody is very happy and starts waiting for next Christmas soon.
    The 25th and the 26th of December are days off from work as well.
    Then people usually visit their friends and relatives. Some people go to the graveyards to lihgt the

    candles there too.
    Christmas time is very beautiful!

    Estonians eat a lot for Christmas!
    Here's the usual menu:

    Verivorst/ Verikäkk- Black pudding/ blood sausage
    Kartulid kastme ja sealihaga - Potatoes with sauce and pork
    Hapukapsas - Sauerkraut
    Rosolje - Beetroot salad
    Kartulisalat - Potato salad
    Sült - Meat jelly
    Heeringas - Herring
    Kõrvitsa salat - Pumpkin salad
    Piparkoogid - Gingerbread
    Mandariinid - Mandarins
    Pohlamoos - Whortleberry jam

  • Christmas tree - slideshow


    Christmas in my home

    In my home, in Estonia, Christmas is a big holiday. At 24th of December we wake up and then go to buy food with my mother. Sometimes my father goes skiing and my brother and sister come home. They live away from home: my brother lives in Norway, but my sister lives in Estonia. When we come back home with my mum, we start making Christmas dinner. In my family we usually eat potatoes, pork, sauerkraut, desserts, candies and other deliceous things. In the evening my sister and brother and brothers' wife will come to our house and we sit and talk. At 8 o'clock we are going to eat and when we all have eaten then itäs time for presents. Usually we have to read a poem to get a present but last Christmas we didn't do it. When we all have got our presents then we chat some more, listen to the Christmas songs and watch TV. At Christmas Eve there are some really good films on TV. Then it's late and we all go to sleep. This is what my Christmas is usually like.

  • Halloween

    Our first project is about Halloween.

    We got in touch with an Italian school and agreed to share our thoughts about that holiday.

    So we shared PowerPoint presentations with each other: here is the link to Italian school's presentation and here you can get to ours!

    We joined the Halloween forum at www.teachersdesk.it and will continue chatting there;

  • Mardipäev and Kadripäev

    Mardipäev and Kadripäev are important holidays in Estonian folk calendar.
    For a small nation like us it is important to keep our traditions alive and introduce them to other nations as well.
    So here we go!

    Girls from form 9 made some Powerpoint presentations about Mardipäev. There were 4 different presentations to start with.
    The final task was sharing customs of Mardipäev with the French school so we tried to make the presentation informative and nice by combining the best parts of different works. Here you can see what came out.

    We'll send the link to the Italian school (who we discussed the Halloween with) as well since they were very interested about it.
    There's also a Mardipäev videowhere you can see how children run from house to house and how does it all work in reality :) (don't worry about the notification about the certificate... just accept, it's safe! It might take some time though, size about 90MB, in *.wmv format).

    Kadripäev is similar to Mardipäev, but there are some differences too. Boys from form 9 made some presentations about Kadripäev and the material was used in a final presentation what you can see here.
